(Detail story of Princess Meenakshi)

Lord Shiva incarnated on earth in the form of Sundreswarar to get married to Meenakshi, Goddess Parvati on earth. Goddess Parvati had in the past incarnated as a daughter in the Pandya king Malayadhwaja, the king of Madurai, as a result of the severe penance.

She took over the rule of the city. Then God came and proposed marriage to her, which she accepted. This marriage was considered to be the biggest event in the world, in which people from the earth gathered in Madurai.

Lord Vishnu himself came to conduct this marriage from his abode, Vaikuntha. He was delayed on his way because of Lord Indra. Meanwhile, the deity Koodal conducted the marriage function. Later, an angry Lord Vishnu came and vowed never to come to the city of Madurai. He settled in Alagar Koyil, a beautiful mountain bordering the city. Later other deities celebrated him.

This marriage and the pacification of Lord Vishnu are celebrated as the biggest festival of Madurai, which is called Chitirai Tiruvizha, the festival of the beautiful God.

This divine couple ruled the city for a long time. It is also believed that Indra got the idol of Lord Shiva in the form of Shivling and built the original temple. This custom is followed in the temple even today. Indra's vehicle also gets a place in the procession of the festival.
